What motivates you toward action?

Mostly people are motivated by a reward system. This reward system might be obvious and easy to recognise. Someone who has just completed the Comrades Marathon receives a medallion as a reward, you go out for cake and coffee to celebrate the killo’s you lost, to celebrate a friend’s birthday or a raise. You might give your son some extra money this week for helping in the garden on Saturday.

Then there are rewards that are not so obvious, some that only you know about and then there are those that not even you know. These rewards still play a considerable role in our lives and influence our decisions and choices daily.

I do not want to go deep into any of these reward systems, but I do want you to know that some of these reward systems are very negative and even dangerous. Just think for a moment what you do when you feel tired, dejected, depressed, fearful, lonely, rejected, scared or unloved. Do you try to feel better? What is this that you do to feel better? Do you at times grab at things that actually make everything worse, but at the time you thought it would help?

So, when you feel like this, be careful not to just do something to feel better, but think twice before you act.

What negative feelings do you experience that can be motivators toward very negative or destructive actions?
What are some of those actions?
